"Expect nothing. Today: that is your life" ["Erwarte nichts. Heute: das ist dein Leben"] wrote satirist and social critic Kurt Tucholsky in Die Weltbühne. A combination of grinding pessimism and care-free living characterized much of daily life during the Weimar era. ["Schnipsel," in Die Weltbühne, September 15, 1931, p. 140]
