The Berlin Victory Column (c. 1905)
This turn-of-the-century photograph of the Berlin Victory Column shows one of Anton von Werner’s friezes carved into the base of the monument. Although the Victory Column was unveiled on Sedan Day (September 2) in 1873, Werner’s friezes – combining realism and allegory rather awkwardly – were first attached two years later.
