Modrow, Hans (*1928); SED/PDS; educated as a machinist; later earned an advanced degree in social science and economics; 1945-49, held as a POW in the Soviet Union, where he attended a re-education school; 1952-53, attended the Kosomol Acadamy in Moscow, thereafter he attended the Karl Marx Party Academy; 1958-67, candidate of the Central Committee of the SED; 1971-73, head of the Propaganda Department [Abteilung Agitation] of the Central Committee of the SED; 1973-89, First Secretary of the district government of Dresden; 1989-90, Chairman of the GDR Council of Ministers; 1990-94, member of the Bundestag; 1994-2004, member of the European Parliament; regarded as a reformer within the GDR.
