Turkish Guest Workers (1969)

Until the mid-1960s, most guest workers came from the Mediterranean region, mainly Italy. Later, they came mostly from Turkey. Shown here are Turkish guest workers in their modest shared quarters at 35 Münchener Straße in Frankfurt am Main (January 1969). In 1973, rising unemployment and the recession that followed in the wake of the first oil crisis led to a moratorium on recruitment. Photo by Abisag Tüllmann.
