Special Edition of Der Jude in Honor of Martin Buber’s Fiftieth Birthday (1928)

Der Jude was co-founded in 1916 by Martin Buber and Salman Schocken as a monthly review of Zionist thought. The final issue, published in 1928, included a special edition in honor of Martin Buber’s fiftieth birthday. In his tribute to Buber, Robert Weltsch wrote: “In this reintegration into a living, flowing stream of Judaism, in this Jewish reflection on human values, in this striving toward a norm that subjects our individual and collective action, as well as our nationalism, to a moral law, in this slow and joyful voyage of discovery toward a Jewish reality, we have a person [Martin Buber] who teaches and leads us.” The special edition included articles by Arnold Zweig, Gerhard (i.e. Gershom) Scholem, Max Brod, Leo Baeck, and other leading Jewish intellectual and writers of the time.
