Anti-Calvinist Broadsheet (c. 1600)

This anti-Calvinist broadsheet dates from the dispute between the Calvinists in Lower Hesse and the Lutherans in Upper Hesse over the real presence of Christ during Communion. The image shows the Goddess of Reason in her carriage, which has come to an abrupt stop on its way to heaven. One of the horses has collapsed; Aristotle (B), his whip lifted in the air, has turned around to look at the front axle, which appears to have broken after crashing into the cornerstone of Christ. Zwingli (D), Calvin (E), und Beza (F) are working on the carriage, Goclenius (M) und Molther (N) are discussing what to do, and Sadel (G), Grynaeus (H), und Pezel (I) are attempting to push the carriage from behind. They are all being watched by a jester (K), who ridicules their efforts. Woodcut, Hesse, c. 1600.
